How to Get More Out of a Single Volleyball
Share
Sure, we all know how to bump, set, and spike — but a volleyball is way more versatile than you might think. From gym class to youth group to backyard games, this one ball can unlock tons of fast-paced fun.
Here are some creative, movement-packed games you can play with just a volleyball and a group of ready-to-move players.
1. Classic Volleyball Scrimmage
Start with the basics. Divide into two teams and go for it! Ideal for older kids and teens, this builds teamwork, communication, and coordination.
Pro tip: For beginners, lower the net or play with fewer people per side to build confidence.
2. 9 Square in the Air
This crowd favorite takes the core of volleyball — keeping the ball up — and adds movement, rotation, and fast-paced action in all directions. Great for camps, churches, and PE classes.
3. Volleyball Gauntlet
Set up a row of defenders. One player at a time must run through while teammates toss soft volleyballs at them (below the waist only!). Think dodgeball-meets-volleyball — tons of laughs, and great for agility.
4. Partner Bump Challenge
Pair up players and give each team a volleyball. The goal: keep the ball going as long as possible using only bumps. Record each team’s high score and encourage improvement.
Great for reinforcing control and teamwork.
5. King (or Queen) of the Court
Rotate players in and out of a half-court volleyball game where the winning team stays and challengers rotate. Perfect for large groups with limited space or time.
6. Volleyball Keep-Up
Form a circle and keep the ball off the ground using bumps or sets only. Add a twist: if someone double-hits or lets it drop, they’re out.
Last few standing = ultimate control champs.
7. Target Spike
Set up hoops or cones on the opposite side of the net and challenge players to land the ball inside a zone with their spike or serve.
This is a killer drill for accuracy and focus.
8. Blind Volleyball
Hang a sheet or curtain over the net so teams can’t see the other side. Now you’re playing a version of volleyball that’s all about anticipation, reaction, and listening.
Bonus: Lots of unexpected moments and team laughs.
